  • DO I NEED TO PREPARE FOR A DEXA BONE DENSITY SCAN?
    Dress in loose comfortable clothing without any metal, i.e. buttons, zippers, clips. Otherwise we can give you a gown to wear if needed. You cannot have the scan within 5 days of having contrast with a CT, Nuclear Medicine or MRI study and 2 weeks from a barium study.

  • DO I NEED A REFERRAL?
    For DEXA Bone Density Scans and all Paediatric patients, a referral from your GP or specialist doctor is needed. For adults (over 18 years old) wanting to have a Body Composition Scan, a referral is needed from either a Medical Practitioner, Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Sports and Exercise Physician, Physiotherapist, Accredited Exercise Physiologist (ESSA) or sports medicine doctor.
  • WHAT WILL IT COST?
    For DEXA Bone Density Scans the cost is $115 (referrals that meet the Medicare rebate requirements are bulk-billed). For Paediatric DEXA Bone Density scans the cost is $115 (referrals that meet the Medicare rebate requirements are bulk-billed). Please speak to our staff to see if you qualify for the Medicare rebate. For Body Composition Scans the cost is $115 (no Medicare or Private Health Fund rebates available).
  • WHAT IF I AM PREGNANY OR BREASTFEEDING?
    You cannot have any DEXA scans while pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • CAN THESE RESULTS BE COMPARED TO PREVIOUS DEXA SCANS DONE ELSEWHERE?
    No, as different scanners use different acquisition methods, dual energy generation, calibration, reference ranges, software and regions of interest.
  • IS IT SAFE?
    Yes - DEXA scanners use very low dose x-rays to produce the scan. Typical dose is less than a day's natural background radiation.
  • IS THERE A WEIGHT LIMIT?
    Yes - 158kg. Please speak to our staff if you are over this weight limit.
  • HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
    DEXA Bone Density Scan takes 20 minutes & a Total Body Composition Scan takes 30 minutes.
  • WHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE MY APPOINTMENT?

  • Does Medicare cover the cost?
    A DEXA bone density referral that's eligible for Medicare-rebate has zero gap fee. Please note, Medicare doesn't cover a body composition scan.
  • Can I have a scan without a referral?
    No. All bone density scans require a valid referral from a GP or Specialist. All body composition scans require a valid referral from a GP, Specialist or Allied Health Professional.
  • Do you do scans on children?
    Yes we do. We specialise in paediatric bone density and body composition scanning. Please let us know the age of the child when you request an appointment.
  • When will my doctor get the results?
    Your doctor will usually receive the results within 1 - 2 business days.
