You cannot have the scan within 5 days of having contrast with a CT, Nuclear Medicine or MRI study and 2 weeks from a barium study.
For DEXA Bone Density Scans and all Paediatric patients, a referral from your GP or specialist doctor is needed.
For adults (over 18 years old) wanting to have a Body Composition Scan, a referral is needed from either a Medical Practitioner, Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Sports and Exercise Physician, Physiotherapist, Accredited Exercise Physiologist (ESSA) or sports medicine doctor.
For DEXA Bone Density Scans the cost is $115 (referrals that meet the Medicare rebate requirements are bulk-billed).
For Paediatric DEXA Bone Density scans the cost is $115 (referrals that meet the Medicare rebate requirements are bulk-billed).

No, as different scanners use different acquisition methods, dual energy generation, calibration, reference ranges, software and regions of interest.
Yes - DEXA scanners use very low dose x-rays to produce the scan. Typical dose is less than a day's natural background radiation.

DEXA Bone Density Scan takes 20 minutes & a Total Body Composition Scan takes 30 minutes.
